Tax Year

The most difficult part of this process is knowing what tax year your accounting software exports the pre-printed form as. Some accounting software will tell you what year of form that it will print on, others may not. There are 3 ways that we can say will help you get this correct.

  1. If they do tell you what year the form is, that is great. Use the year they say unless items are not going in the correct boxes. If data is not being imported into the correct boxes in the '.src' file, it is likely due to the wrong tax year. Try the process again using one year before the one stated. If this does not fix your issue, it may be that the accounting software is printing the data to close to the lines on a pre-printed form. In this case you may need to convert the 'PDF' to an '.src' then export the data out of the 1099 Express program into excel and manipulate the data more.
  2. If the accounting software does not tell you what year it is exporting, try using the year that is one before your accounting software year (if available). Example would be if you are using Quickbooks 2021, you should try tax year 2020.
  3. If all else fails, knowing what information you were exporting (specific box that should have money in it), view the different tax years for the available forms (these can be found in the left menu under 'Pre-Printed Form Converter (PPFC)' -> 'Form Information' -> 'Format' -> '<Form Type (NEC, Misc, etc)>' -> '<Tax Year>' or by going to 'Pre-Printed Form Converter (PPFC)' and clicking the years listed). View both the example form on the given 'Format' page and the 'PDF' that you printed out. Match up the information the best you can and select the newest form that matches the data you have.
